Description:

Biology departmental lab assistants will perform basic lab maintenance jobs in various faculty research labs within the biology department. Jobs include (but are not limited to): glassware cleaning, stocking inventory, waste removal, and some office work. Departmental lab assistants will work under the supervision of the biology department lab manager. Please note that this is NOT a research position. Previous lab experience is not required.

Students are encouraged but not required to train and/or work over the summer for this position.

Qualifications:

Description:

The teaching assistants for BIOL BC1500 Organismal and Evolutionary Biology will assist Professor Emlyn Resetarits with course instruction during the spring semester. TAs must be able to offer at least two office hours per week (TAs will hold office hours as a pair, and first-time TAs will be paired with senior TAs). All TAs are expected to attend lectures and help facilitate class discussion. TAs will also be in charge of assisting the course staff assistant, Colin Flanagan, in managing a shared course email address in order to answer course content related questions.

Description:

TAs for BIOL BC1501 Introduction to Organismal and Evolutionary Biology Lab are invaluable resources for assisting students with lab activities/lessons, data collection and analysis, dissections, worksheets, experiments, lab reports, and proctoring lab exams. Lab TAs are required to prepare for each lab's in-person meeting by reading the lab's background material (pre-lab non paid prep time: ~45 min to 1 hr per lab). Lab TAs also have the opportunity to host lab exam study sessions with students and to assistant students with their lab reports in collaboration with Barnard's Science Writing Fellows, who also work with this lab course.

Qualifications:

Students need to have completed BIOL BC1501 Intro to Organismal and Evolutionary Biology Lab to be eligible for this position.

Duties for the position include the following: setting up and breaking down lab materials, cleaning lab materials (test tubes, beakers, etc.), labeling lab ware (PCR tubes, beakers, etc.), preparing and distributing solutions, providing general care for plants and animals, completing errands at nearby locations, and light office work (photocopying, data entry, etc.).

Qualifications:

A minimum of 3 work hours per week is required of all lab assistants. Job Description:

The Biology Department is seeking two part time student employees to serve as Biology Ambassadors who are interested in sharing their passion for the biological sciences. These roles will be involved in outreach and communications, both within the department of Biology and at-large at Barnard. There are two positions available; one focusing on outreach and the other, communications. The Biology Ambassadors will be responsible for reaching and engaging our full Biology student body, the Barnard STEM community, and campus as a whole. If you love biology, are passionate about diversity, equity, and inclusion in the sciences and are enthusiastic about sharing your excitement with others, this position is perfect for you! 

The two ambassadors will be working as a team to fulfill the responsibilities below, but one position will be more focused on outreach and the other, communication. There will be significant overlap in the responsibilities for each role.

Responsibilities:

Students will be expected to commit to work for a minimum of 2 and up to 5 hours a week, with hours varying from week to week based on departmental needs and scheduled events, most often scheduled for Fridays

Both Ambassadors will:

• Regularly meet with other Ambassadors and supervisors to establish goals and workflows

• Support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion projects and Initiatives within the Department. 

• Liaise with guest speakers for our Seminar and Coffee Hour speaker series. 

• Attend Barnard Biology Anti-Racism Working Group meetings and support with preparing for these meetings.

• Support with planning, setting up, and breaking down of all departmental outreach events, many of which take place on Fridays 

• Develop content for the Research Corner webpage including conducting brief interviews with researchers about their work and their journey in the sciences 

The Outreach Ambassador will: 

• Manage contacts for the department including the majors listserv and the Barnard Bio Anti-Racism Working Group

• Generally liaise between department faculty, staff, and student body

• Represent the Department of Biology at campus events 

• Send emails promoting events of interest to relevant mailing list (using MailChimp) 

The Communications Ambassador will: 

• Manage and oversee the social media presence of the Department using forums such as Instagram, Facebook Twitter, and other social networking sites as appropriate

• Manage communications for the department including the Departmental list-serv and the Barnard Bio Anti-Racism Working Group

• Create and distribute advertising materials for departmental events 

• Create and manage departmental calendars of events for students

Skills, Qualifications & Requirements: 

The Biology Ambassador positions are suitable for students of any year, with preference given to Sophomores and Juniors. Strong reference will be given to current or prospective Biology majors but the department routinely hires students of diverse interests and levels of experience. Most importantly, Biology Ambassadors must be willing to learn, grow, collaborate, and take initiative. Interest in scientific communication is highly encouraged. The Ambassador focusing on outreach should be organized, detail-oriented, creative, and project a warm and friendly presence at departmental and campus-wide events. The Ambassador focusing on communication should be creative and have an eye for design. They will be a strong writer who is comfortable managing social media accounts, including Instagram and Facebook. This student will also have responsibilities in managing the “Research Corner” where members of the faculty and staff are interviewed about their current research.

Responsibilities:

Biology Departmental Lab Assistants will perform basic lab maintenance jobs in various faculty research labs within the Biology Department. Jobs include (but are not limited to): glassware cleaning, stocking inventory, waste removal, and some office work. Departmental Lab assistants will work under the supervision of the Biology Department Lab Manager. Please note that this is NOT a research position. Previous lab experience is not required.

Requirements:  

Previous lab experience is not required, but completion of any college level science course is preferred. Available work shifts are listed on the application form below, but there is some flexibility in scheduling specific start and end times. Daily and weekly instructions will be provided, so no previous experience is necessary. A strong work ethic and sense of responsibility are required.

Compensation: 

Starting wage for the position is $16/hr. Lab assistants gain a 25-cent raise with each semester of experience.

Responsibilities:

The teaching assistants for BIOL BC1502 Introduction to Cellular & Molecular Biology will assist Professor Jon Snow with course instruction during the Spring 2023 semester. TAs must be able to offer at least two office hours per week. First-time TAs will be paired with senior TAs. TAs are required to ‘sit in’ during the lecture in order to assist with course management and content questions unless they make arrangements with Professor Snow in advance. TAs will also be in charge of assisting the course Staff Assistant, Colin Flanagan, in managing a shared course email address in order to answer course content related questions.

Intro Biology Lecture Teaching Assistants must have previously completed BIOL BC1502. Applicants should demonstrate enthusiasm for biology and a strong desire to teach younger students and help them succeed in this fundamental course for the major. Responsibilities: 

Introductory Biology Lab TAs will work in-person to provide critical assistance to the main lab instructors during each 3-hr lab period for the Spring Semester of 2023. Lab TAs are invaluable resources for assisting students with lab activities/lessons, worksheets, and experiments. Lab TAs will also have the opportunity to work in collaboration with the Science Writing Fellows to help students with their lab reports outside of the normal lab period (this is optional).

Lab TAs are enthusiastic about mentoring younger students just beginning their biology journey, and seek to be role models who encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity in their peers. The ideal TA is supportive, patient, and kind, and wants their peers to succeed in this foundational course for the major and pre-health tracks.

Requirements:

Applicants should have earned a B or better in both BC1501 Introductory Lab in Organismal and Evolutionary Biology and BC1503 Introductory Lab in Cell and Molecular Biology. In addition to assisting the lab instructors during a 3-hr lab period, Lab TAs are expected to prepare for each lab on their own time (~1 hr per week, which is unpaid prep-work). The maximum period of time a student can work in this position is 4 semesters. This criterion enables the Biology Department to increase its opportunities for students to work as teaching assistants for Intro Biology Labs.
