Upper Level Labs
Upper Level Labs
Lab course requirements:
The General Biology, C&M, P&O, and E&E tracks require three upper-level lab courses.
- Students pursuing these tracks may take any upper-level biology lab courses (BIOL BC2100+) for which they meet the pre- or corequisites.
The Computational Biology (CB) track requires one upper-level lab course.
- Students pursuing this track must take a designated computational biology lab class (CB-Lab). View the list below of common CB-Lab classes. If a computational biology major wishes to fulfill this requirement with a lab not on the list, they should talk to their advisor and/or the associate chair.
The biology minor requires two upper-level lab courses.
- Like non-computational biology majors, biology minors may take any upper-level biology lab courses (BIOL BC2100+) for which they meet the pre- or corequisites.
Some lab courses have prerequisites offered in the prior semester.
For instance, BIOL BC2280 Animal Behavior is a prerequisite for BIOL BC2281 Lab in Animal Behavior, and it is typically offered in the semester before the lab.
A yearlong research & seminar course may substitute up to two lab courses.
For instance, BIOL BC3591/BIOL BC3592 Guided Research and Seminar fulfills two lab course requirements.
Students may obtain permission to take laboratory courses at Columbia (or other institutions) to satisfy the lab requirement.
To determine if a lab course from a different institution will satisfy the lab requirement at Barnard, view the list of Columbia course equivalencies or contact the associate chair.
