Faculty Positions

Assistant Professor of Biology
The Department of Biology at Barnard College, Columbia University, seeks a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor (starting July 2017) to teach undergraduates and establish an active, externally funded research program. We are interested in candidates who are broadly trained and address questions at the physiological and/or whole-organism level. Teaching responsibilities include an advanced lecture, laboratory, and seminar course in the candidate’s area of specialization, and participation in core courses required for the major. Ph.D. and postdoctoral experience required; teaching experience desirable. We are interested in candidates who are broadly trained and address questions at the physiological and/or whole-organism level in any non-vertebrate systems.
 
**Please note that we cannot accommodate anyone who studies laboratory mammals at this time.  Those who study other types of laboratory vertebrates or invertebrates are welcome to apply.

Office Assistant
(
Positions Available for Fall 2017)

Perform clerical duties such as photocopying, running errands, mailings.  Computer duties, including data entry and may perform web research.  Interact with faculty, staff, and students.  Asisst with other departmental tasks and special projects as necessasry.  Proficiency in one or more computer programs required, particularly Excel.

Teaching Assistants for Introductory Biology Labs
(Positions Available for Fall 2017)
 
Requirements: Students who received a grade of B or better in both BC1001 & 1002 are eligible to apply for Lab TA positions in BC1001 & BC1002. Students who received a grade of B or better in both BC1501 & 1503 are eligible to apply for Lab TA positions in BC1001, BC1002, BC1501 & BC1503.
 
Responsibilities: Assist the lab instructor during each 3-hr lab section with the following: grading of pre-lab quizzes; ensuring that students follow lab procedures, including lab breakdown and lab safety instructions; providing knowledgeable feedback to students on their questions regarding the lab material; proctoring exams. Lab TAs are expected to prepare for each lab on their own time (~1 hr per week for lab prep). Starting hourly wage for the position is $12.00/hr.

Lab Assistants for Introductory Biology Labs
(Positions Available for Fall 2017)
 
Responsibilities: Lab assistants are an integral part of Barnard's Introductory Biology Labs. Duties for the position include the following: setting up and breaking down lab materials, cleaning lab materials (test tubes, beakers, etc.), labeling lab ware (PCR tubes, beakers, etc.), preparing and distributing solutions, providing general care for plants and animals, completing errands at nearby locations, and light office work (photocopying, data entry, etc.).
 
Requirements: A minimum of 3 work hours per week is required of all lab assistants. Available work shifts are listed on the application form below, but there is some flexibility in scheduling specific start and end times of some shifts. Daily and weekly instructions will be provided, so no experience is necessary. However, a strong work ethic and sense of responsibility are required for the position. Starting hourly wage for the position is $12.00/hr.

Supplemental Instruction Leaders (SI)
(No Openings At This Time)
 
SI Leaders are students that hold structured study groups sessions and review lecture material covered in BC1500/ BC1502 or BC2100. Leaders must have successfully passed these courses and must attend a mandatory SI training session in the summer. The SI Leaders attend all lectures affiliated with BC1500/BC1502 or BC2100, hold 3 hourly SI sessions a week, and 1 hour of office hours each week. SI Leaders are hired for an entire academic term.
